Herb is married to Eleanor
Vincenz, and they are the parents of two daughters.
He was employed in high executive
positions with several corporations before joining Vulcan Materials
Company in 1972. At Vulcan, he became President and CEO in 1986
and was elected Chairman and CEO in 1992. Upon his retirement in
1997, he was elected Chairman of the Board Emeritus.
He serves as a member of the Board
of Directors of Temple-Inland Inc., of Austin, Texas. Previously,
he served as a Director of AmSouth Bancorporation and Protective
Life Corporation.
Herb is a member of the Board of Distinguished
Advisors of The American Committees on Foreign Relations and a member
of the Advisory Board of the National Czech and Slovak Museum and
Library. He is a Trustee or Director of: Birmingham-Southern College,
Alabama Ear Institute, Leadership Birmingham, Leadership Alabama,
Region 2020, and the Birmingham Committee on Foreign Relations.
He has served in numerous other civic capacities in Birmingham and
the State of Alabama. He was elected to the Alabama Academy of Honor
in 1997.
