Following completion of course work for his Ph.D. in Political Science
at
the University of Chicago, Ed returned to Birmingham to help establish
the
Center for Urban Studies and related academic programs at UAB. After a
decade at UAB, he had the extraordinary privilege of serving as the
senior
staff member for Birmingham's Mayor Richard Arrington, Jr. from
1979-1987.
In 1987, Ed joined Birmingham-Southern College where he teaches and
directs
the Office of International Programs. He did prove during the spring
term
of 1996 that one cannot both teach college classes and serve as interim
superintendent of Birmingham schools.
Ed and his wife, Ruth, an Episcopal priest since retiring from UAB,
have
four grown children: Jennie, Brad, Rachel and Matt.
